Reliable surfaces for labs and healthcare

With over 40 years of experience fabricating and fitting quality acrylic surfaces, we understand the unique demands of healthcare and laboratory environments. These spaces need to meet the strictest hygiene standards while still being functional and easy to maintain – for patients, healthcare professionals and researchers alike.

From treatment centres to research labs, acrylic solid surfaces offer a balance of practicality, durability and design versatility. Here’s how they support some of the most demanding environments.

Why surface selection matters in clinical and lab settings

The choice of surface material plays a big role in how healthcare and laboratory spaces function – and how it’s used day to day. Here are a few key considerations:

Infection control

Non-porous solid surfaces don’t harbour bacteria or viruses. This helps reduce the risk of and supports the frequent deep cleaning needed in medical and laboratory settings.

Patient wellbeing

Studies suggest that the design of clinical environments can influence patient comfort. Smooth surfaces, soft lighting and calm finishes can help create a more supportive atmosphere during treatment or recovery.

Durability

Surfaces in these environments are constantly in use and need to withstand regular cleaning. Acrylic solid surfaces are durable enough to cope with both, without showing wear or losing performance over time.

The benefits of acrylic solid surfaces in healthcare environments

We work with some of the world’s leading solid surface brands – including Corian®, HI-MACS®, Staron® and Krion® – to deliver reliable, long-lasting results in medical and laboratory settings. Here’s why they work well:

  • Superior hygiene: Acrylic solid surfaces are non-porous and seamless, meaning there are no joints or exposed edges where dirt or bacteria can build up. They’re simple to clean and hold up well to regular disinfection.

  • Chemical resistance: These surfaces perform well against a wide range of mild acids, bases and solvents used in clinical or light lab settings. For areas where harsher chemicals are used, we recommend pairing the surface with protective mats, trays or overlays for added durability.

  • Flexible design: From integrated sinks in patient bathrooms to curved reception desks and custom wall cladding, solid surfaces can be thermoformed into virtually any shape. This makes them easy to adapt to both clinical and front-of-house areas.

  • Durability and repairability: Acrylic surfaces are built to last. They resist daily wear, and if damage does happen, most can be repaired on-site – extending their lifespan and reducing disruption.

  • A great range of finishes: There’s a wide selection of colours and finishes available, including options for subtle backlighting. This gives you flexibility in how a space looks and feels, without compromising function.

Selecting acid-resistant countertops for labs

Chemical resistance is a key consideration in laboratory environments. Our range includes chemical resistant laboratory countertops that offer performance in everyday lab use.

For general-purpose worktops, brands like Corian® and HI-MACS® offer resistance to common substances when spills are cleaned up quickly. For areas with greater chemical exposure, we can recommend specialist formulations or practical additions.

All our laboratory solid surface options are non-porous, which helps prevent chemicals absorbing and staining. This supports hygiene while protecting long-term surface performance. Every lab is different, and our team is on hand to help you find the right solution – whether that involves choosing a specific brand, combining materials or introducing functional extra protection.

Transforming The Christie Proton Beam Therapy Centre

Acrylic solid surfaces can play a transformative role in healthcare environments. A prime example is our work at The Christie Proton Beam Therapy Centre – the UK’s first high-energy proton beam therapy service, treating up to 750 patients annually.

We worked alongside the main contractor and architectural team to deliver a solution for the entrance corridors leading into the treatment rooms. These transitional spaces were designed to feel less clinical and more calming.

We fabricated seamless Krion® wall panels featuring a bespoke ‘flowers in bloom’ design, softly backlit with LEDs. The result was a soothing, visually engaging route into the therapy rooms. Krion’s non-porous surface supported The Christie’s rigorous hygiene requirements, while its smooth, thermoformed finish brought the design concept to life.

Selecting the right surfaces for your project

From outpatient clinics to specialist research labs, acrylic solid surfaces offer a reliable, adaptable solution for demanding environments. Whether you need acid resistant countertops for labs, durable lab surfaces or compliant healthcare facility surface materials, we can help.

We’ve been working with solid surfaces for over 40 years, and we’re certified partners of the Corian® Quality Network and HI-MACS® Quality Club. These accreditations mean we follow the correct processes and meet the standards set by the manufacturers – something our clients can rely on when it comes to performance, consistency and getting the job done properly.
